I earned my doctoral degree in Neuroscience in 2001, and since then I have worked as a freelance journalist. In the lab, my focus was pain physiology; now I cover chronic pain and pain research for online outlets as well as magazines. I have practiced yoga for over 20 years in part to manage my own chronic back pain. I "discovered" Viniyoga and AVI in 2011; that year I started training in the 500-hour Vinyoga Foundations Program. I teach privately, and in several yoga teacher and therapist training programs. Yoga--and Viniyoga in particular--has the profound capacity to affect the nervous system through the breath and other tools. Through education and specialized practice, I hope to help people use these tools to reduce the impact of chronic pain and other conditions that affect our systems. Keep up with my work in my monthly e-newsletter, Notes on Pain, or on social media @SutherlandPhD.
